Hydrogen Energy and Offshore Wind Power... Doosan Heavy Industries Strengthens Eco-Friendly Businesses

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, which had been shaken by the government's nuclear phase-out policy, is recently attempting to diversify its portfolio by increasing orders related to eco-friendly energy. Expanding its eco-friendly business from hydrogen turbines to offshore wind power generators, the company aims to increase its order plan to the 8 trillion won range this year.

According to the industry on the 20th, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is recently expanding orders and development business cooperation related to eco-friendly energy in all directions. First, the eco-friendly business area that Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is most interested in is hydrogen energy.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is constructing a hydrogen liquefaction plant at its Changwon factory, scheduled for completion in 2022, where it plans to produce blue hydrogen (hydrogen produced with minimized carbon emission processes). In Jeju Island, it is attempting green hydrogen production using wind power, and is also considering clean hydrogen production using SMR, the next-generation nuclear reactor.

Having succeeded in developing the world's fifth large gas turbine for power generation, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is also expanding its business area toward hydrogen gas turbine development. Since May last year, it has been developing a 5MW-class hydrogen gas turbine hydrogen full combustion burner with proprietary technology, and is concurrently developing a 300MW-class hydrogen gas turbine hydrogen co-combustion burner with the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials.

In July, it signed a 'Mutual Cooperation Agreement for Next-Generation Eco-Friendly Hydrogen Turbines Based on Domestic Technology' with Korea Western Power. Through this, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will strengthen the demonstration base for medium and small hydrogen turbines under development, and the technology secured in the future will be used for new and old power plant conversions promoted by Korea Western Power.

Meanwhile, among eco-friendly businesses, the field where visible results appear first is the offshore wind power sector. In March this year, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction completed its second wind power factory at its Changwon headquarters in preparation for an increase in orders for offshore wind and large wind power generators. With the completion of the second factory, it became possible to produce 30 offshore wind power generators annually.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, which started its offshore wind power business in 2005, owns 3MW and 5.5MW offshore wind power generator models, and plans to commercialize an 8MW model in 2022. To date, it has installed 239.5MW of wind power generators domestically, of which 96MW are offshore wind power.

In August, it was selected as the lead organization for the second phase of the 8MW floating offshore wind system development project and plans to actively participate in design, manufacturing, demonstration, and commercial complex discovery projects. The project applies the 8MW model currently being developed as a national project. The project demonstration will be conducted at the wave-wind power test site operated by the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) in Jeju.

Recently, it also actively joined the offshore wind power market by supplying key parts for ships used to install offshore wind power generators. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction succeeded in domestic production of the 'rack and chord' used in offshore wind power generator installation ships and signed a supply contract with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.
