'The Boy Is Coming' Han Kang Nowon-gu Humanities Book Concert Is Coming

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) will hold a free humanities book concert with physicist Kim Sang-wook and writer Han Kang.

This book concert was selected through the Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous District Cultural Foundation Federation’s “2021 Autonomous District Culture and Arts Content Specialization Project” competition and was prepared for residents who have had significantly fewer opportunities to enjoy culture and arts due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

It is planned as a cultural concert combining humanities and music, under the theme “Unrecognized Personal Things,” consisting of a series of three performances: “Universal Sentences of Youth,” “Beyond Boundaries: Science and Art,” and “Today, Our Story Revisited.”

On October 5th at 7:30 PM, the “Beyond Boundaries: Science and Art” event will be held at the Nowon Culture and Arts Center Grand Theater, featuring physicist Professor Kim Sang-wook, who gained public recognition through his appearance on “Masters-X Crossing the Line.”

He will discuss with the audience how the seemingly contrasting fields of science and art can harmoniously blend and what kind of creative inspiration art can provide.

Before the lecture, the string quartet “Jibak & VRI String Quartet,” nominated for the 2020 Korean Popular Music Awards, will perform.

The final series event, “Today, Our Story Revisited,” will take place on October 12th at the same time and place. Writer Han Kang, winner of the UK’s prestigious Man Booker Prize, and literary critic Heo Hee will appear.

Through the author’s novels “The Boy Who Escaped” and “I Do Not Part,” they will discuss the recent Myanmar uprising, our May 18 Democratic Uprising, and the Jeju 4.3 Incident, sharing a time to reflect on historical pain. Singer-songwriter Jang Pil-soon will prepare a music performance linked to the lecture, with warm and solemn songs adding depth to the theme.

All book concerts are free of charge.

Reservations can be made from 10 AM on September 23rd through the Naver reservation page, and detailed information is available on the Nowon Cultural Foundation website.

To comply with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, the event will operate with socially distanced seating to ensure safe viewing.

The first book concert, “Universal Sentences of Youth,” held successfully on the 28th of last month, featured writer Choi Eun-young and the band “Broccoli, You Too,” delivering messages of comfort and courage to young people. It received enthusiastic responses, selling out all seats within two hours on the day of reservation, becoming a great gift to residents who had longed for cultural performances.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “I hope this book concert brings comfort and joy to residents,” and added, “We will continue to present various programs so that residents’ lives can become richer through culture and arts.”
