[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] As the social distancing level 4 continues in the Seoul metropolitan area due to the spread of COVID-19, many people are expected to spend the five-day long Chuseok holiday at home, becoming 'Homechujok.' Large retail companies such as department stores have prepared various cultural events and exhibitions to attract consumers staying in the city instead of visiting their hometowns.
According to the distribution industry on the 19th, Lotte Department Store Jamsil branch's Lotte Gallery is holding the 'GITD Skate Park Archive Exhibition' by artist Gu Jeong-ah until the 24th of next month. Artist Gu was the second Korean, after Nam June Paik, to hold a solo exhibition at the Pompidou Center in Paris. This exhibition features various works related to Gu's representative 'Skate Park' series, which shines light in the darkness.
At 'Ground Siso Myeongdong,' a large media art exhibition hall located on the 6th floor of Lotte Department Store's main branch, the first exhibition 'Blue Room,' created in collaboration with Korea's top creative studio Habitante since June, is ongoing. Under the concept of 'Journey to Awakening,' the exhibition begins with 'Encounter of Blue Light,' where intense blue light fills the exhibition hall, followed by eight chapters sequentially screened over 50 minutes like a movie.
Hyundai Department Store is holding 'The Art H,' exhibiting and selling over 120 works by more than 30 famous domestic and international artists at its Kintex branch until the 4th of next month. Around the 10th-floor Sky Garden and spaces beside the escalators on the 2nd and 3rd floors, about 20 sculptures by domestic and international artists such as Oh Dong-hoon and Oh Won-young are also on display.
Shinsegae Department Store is hosting the 'Fall in Jazz Gallery,' featuring works related to jazz, at its Times Square, Gyeonggi, and Centum City branches. Visitors can listen to jazz music while appreciating artworks by emerging artists expressing jazz through paintings.
At Starfield COEX Mall's Byeolmadang Library, the exhibition 'A Taste Journey of Cultural Nomads' runs until the 26th. It showcases the collection of a collector in his 50s who has traveled the world for 30 years gathering artworks, books, and more, creating a 'Room of Taste Nomads.' Rare collectibles that are hard to encounter elsewhere, such as the 100% handmade 'Indian Chief Bomber Bike' limited edition produced in 2010, the 'Wenger 16999 Giant Swiss Army Knife'?which holds the Guinness World Record for the most multifunctional pocket knife with 87 emergency tools?and the premium bottled water 'Philico' priced at 250,000 KRW per bottle, are all displayed together.
However, large retail facilities such as department stores and outlets will be closed for one to two days on Chuseok day and the day before or after, so visitors should check in advance before visiting.
