1911 New COVID-19 Cases Reported by 9 PM... 13 More Than Previous Day


[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] On the 17th, COVID-19 cases surged across the country.


According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, from midnight to 9 p.m. on that day, a total of 1,911 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide. This is 13 more than the 1,898 cases recorded at the same time the previous day.


Compared to the mid-day tally on last Friday (September 10), which was 1,714 cases, this is an increase of 197 cases.


Looking at the regions where cases were confirmed that day, the metropolitan area accounted for 1,441 cases (75.4%), and non-metropolitan areas accounted for 470 cases (24.6%). Although the data is as of 9 p.m., the metropolitan area’s share exceeds 75%, showing a continuous spread, while cases in non-metropolitan areas are steadily increasing as well.


By city and province, the numbers are: Seoul 692, Gyeonggi 612, Incheon 137, Daegu 70, Chungnam 62, Jeonbuk 56, Busan 51, Gyeongnam 42, Chungbuk 37, Daejeon 33, Gangwon 32, Gwangju and Ulsan 27 each, Gyeongbuk 24, Jeonnam 4, Jeju 3, and Sejong 2.


Confirmed cases were reported in all 17 cities and provinces nationwide.


Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at 0 a.m. on the 18th is expected to increase further to around 2,000, possibly reaching the low to mid-2,000s. On the previous day, 110 cases were added after 9 p.m., closing at a final count of 2,008 cases.
