[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Hyundai Engineering is leading the adoption of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology in step with the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.

Hyundai Engineering announced that on the 16th, it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on "Development and Cooperation of AI-based Automated Landscape Design Technology for Apartment Complexes" with Seoul National University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Planninggo Co., Ltd.

At the MOU signing ceremony, Hwang Heon-gyu, Vice President and Head of Hyundai Engineering's Architecture Division, Ryu Young-ryeol, Associate Dean of Seoul National University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Shin Jin-wook, CEO of Planninggo Co., Ltd., attended to discuss the development and cooperation of future advanced technologies integrating AI into the construction industry.

Through this MOU, each party will form and operate a joint working council. Hyundai Engineering will provide data necessary for AI learning in landscape design, such as landscape drawings, green space, and tree data. Seoul National University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will conduct comprehensive environmental evaluations of AI design outputs and provide research and advisory roles on future green infrastructure construction through AI. Planninggo Co., Ltd. will be responsible for developing and commercializing an AI spatial design program that proposes outdoor space structures based on Hyundai Engineering's vast data.

The "AI-based Automated Landscape Design Technology for Apartment Complexes" is a technology where, by inputting basic design conditions such as the design scope of apartment complex spaces, AI proposes a draft design for outdoor spaces within the complex. This contributes to laying the foundation for efficient design review and accurate construction. Additionally, it is expected to enhance work efficiency through rapid and precise communication with partners in the landscaping industry, including design and construction.

In particular, by collaborating with academia and excellent startups, Hyundai Engineering is expected to secure competitiveness in related technologies by being the first in the industry to apply AI technology to landscaping and further play a leading role in integrating various smart construction technologies in the landscaping field.

Last year, Hyundai Engineering developed the industry's first AI machine learning-based automatic design system for plant steel structures and successfully filed a patent. It also succeeded in developing an AI plastering robot capable of performing concrete leveling work without additional operator intervention, demonstrating proactive investment and development in cutting-edge AI technologies applied to construction.

A Hyundai Engineering official said, "Through this MOU signing, we have taken a leading role in developing next-generation smart construction technologies by applying AI technology to the landscaping field for the first time in the industry," adding, "Our strategy is to become a more 'smart' construction company through active investment and development in smart construction technologies such as AI, BIM, and modular construction."
