[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Ministry of Legislation announced on the 17th that a batch amendment of 15 presidential decrees, which changes Sino-Korean words and Japanese-style legal terms into easy Korean, passed the Cabinet meeting. For example, the difficult Sino-Korean word 'uichi' (義齒) is changed to 'dentures,' and the Japanese-style term 'jeori' (低利) is changed to 'low interest rate.'

The Ministry of Legislation has been promoting this project since 2018 and started correcting Japanese-style terms last year. Last year, 663 legislative amendment bills were delivered to the chairpersons of 16 standing committees of the National Assembly, and 473 presidential decrees were amended in a batch.

This amendment is a follow-up measure for 88 laws that have passed the National Assembly so far out of the 663 bills delivered to the National Assembly last year. By October 9, before Hangul Day, the Ministry plans to prepare amendment drafts for related subordinate statutes and send them to the relevant ministries.

Director Lee Gangseop said, "Through the revision of difficult terms and Japanese-style terms in laws and regulations, we hope that our citizens will be able to read and understand the laws more easily."

Additionally, the Ministry of Legislation announced that it will start the 'Legislative Term of the Year' from this year, which conveys the terms that citizens evaluated as most improved. After conducting a public survey at Gwanghwamun 1st Street until the 24th, the results will be announced in early next month. Director Lee asked, "We ask for your great interest and participation in selecting the 'Legislative Term of the Year.'"
