[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] The IT and gaming industries are consecutively recruiting former government officials and legal professionals. This is interpreted as a response to various sudden adverse events, including government regulations, as the companies grow in size.
According to the IT industry on the 17th, Krafton recruited lawyer Park Jong-myung as head of the legal office at the end of last month. Park is the son-in-law of Woo Chang-rok, former representative lawyer of the law firm Yulchon, who served as the general headquarters chief of the campaign for Choi Jae-hyung, a former Board of Audit and Inspection chairman and a presidential candidate from the People Power Party.
He is responsible for Krafton's internal compliance-related tasks. It is reported that he took over handling a recent workplace harassment case from the founder, Chairman Jang Byung-gyu. Krafton continues to face labor-related noise, including maintaining a comprehensive wage system. The National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee is expected to summon Chairman Jang as a witness during this year's audit to address this issue.
Large platforms, which have been suffering under the government and ruling party's pressure to 'crack down on big tech,' are also recruiting former officials from relevant departments. Kakao is bringing in Woo Young-kyu, an advisor at the law firm Kim & Chang. Woo, who passed the 42nd Administrative Examination, has served in public office for over 20 years, including positions such as support director at the Korea Communications Commission and the Central Radio Management Office, and at the 4th Industrial Revolution Committee support team. He joined Kim & Chang in 2019. Woo is expected to handle government relations with the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Communications Commission at Kakao.
Naver appointed Son Ji-yoon, a former Ministry of Science and ICT official and former LG Uplus executive, as a responsible leader at the executive level in June. Son, who passed the 42nd Administrative Examination and served as director of the Radio and Broadcasting Management Division at the Ministry of Science and ICT, leads the newly established Policy Strategy Task Force (TF) and is in charge of government relations. This TF is reportedly recruiting former bureaucrats.
Danggeun Market recently recruited lawyer Cheon Jun-beom from the 35th Judicial Research and Training Institute class. Cheon, a former partner lawyer at the law firm Seum, mainly handled corporate crisis management and mergers and acquisitions. He is an antitrust law expert who also acted as a litigation representative for the Fair Trade Commission. Danggeun Market, which is rapidly growing in the secondhand trading market, is closely monitoring platform regulation movements. Jung Mina, policy director of the Korea Startup Forum, will also join as head of external cooperation, taking charge of government relations.
