[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Italy will require all workers to carry a COVID-19 vaccination certificate called the 'Green Pass' starting from the 15th of next month.

Local media reported that the Italian government unanimously approved this administrative order at a cabinet meeting on the 16th (local time). The enforcement period is until the end of this year.

All workers in the public and private sectors must prove that they have been vaccinated, are recovering after infection, or have recently tested negative for COVID-19. Violations of the order will result in fines of up to 1,500 euros (approximately 2.07 million KRW).

This is the first case in Europe where vaccination is mandatory for all workers. Although other countries have introduced the Green Pass for cross-border travel, this is the first time that possession of the pass is required for all workers regardless of the public or private sector.

The Italian government initially considered applying the measure only to the public sector, but expanded it to the private sector due to the possibility of a virus resurgence this winter.

The Green Pass, introduced by the European Union (EU) in June, is gradually expanding its scope in Italy. Since the 6th of last month, carrying the Green Pass has been mandatory for entering indoor restaurants and cultural and sports facilities, and from the 1st of this month, it must also be presented by all teaching staff and when using long-distance transportation such as buses, trains, and passenger planes.
