[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The National Police Agency announced on the 17th that at the first-ever cybercrime tracking technique competition, the 'POL-Cyber Challenge,' held on the 10th of this month to mark the inaugural year of the National Investigation Headquarters, Police Lieutenant Lee Seung-hyun (27) of Seoul Jungbu Police Station and Police Lieutenant Kim Young-woong (24) of Gumi Police Station in Gyeongbuk won the grand prize.
This competition presented various problems of differing difficulty levels designed to measure the ability to solve cases by tracking criminal clues and suspects based on a fictional ransomware incident scenario involving malicious extortion software.
With 91 participants from 51 police teams nationwide, the competition was conducted in a format where the team that either solved all problems in the shortest time or achieved the highest score would win. Among the competing teams, the 'Geumyoil Yeonga' team, consisting of Lieutenant Lee and Lieutenant Kim, was the first to achieve a perfect score.
Lieutenant Lee and Lieutenant Kim have been consistently studying cyber-related fields since their time at the Korean National Police University and completed the next-generation security leader training program, 'Best of the Best.' They have also proven their skills by winning awards at various information competitions.
Lieutenant Kim said, "I am very pleased to have achieved great results by participating in an official competition hosted by the National Police Agency, as it feels like a step closer to my goal of becoming a cyberterrorism investigator."
