[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government's Central Park and Greenery Project Office announced on the 17th that it plans to utilize the groundwater discharged inside the tunnel after the completion of the Dongbuk Line subway as water features and park water in Chilpokji, Wolyeongji, and other facilities within Buk Seoul Dream Forest in the future.
Seoul plans to reduce the use of tap water and realize the virtuous cycle of water resources by supplying the discharged groundwater, which is currently wasted, as park water through consultations with construction-related companies, in accordance with the Seoul Metropolitan Government's guidelines for utilizing discharged groundwater, taking advantage of the proximity of the Buk Seoul Dream Forest park site to the groundwater discharge point.
Seoul will install a dedicated pipeline to bring the discharged groundwater to the park up to Chilpokji in Buk Seoul Dream Forest, and through this pipeline, supply the discharged groundwater to the Chilpokji reservoir (1,000 tons) to recycle it as landscaping water that can manage the stream water, Wolyeongji fountain, and park green areas.
Since 2009, Seoul has been making continuous efforts to efficiently utilize wasted discharged groundwater, such as using the discharged groundwater from Myeongdong Station as auxiliary water for the Namsan Dulle-gil stream, helping urban parks to provide an environment suitable for various organisms including birds and amphibians.
Kim In-sook, head of the Central Park and Greenery Project Office, said, “Recycling discharged groundwater, which is otherwise discarded into the sewage system, as water resources within the park has the dual effect of reducing tap water costs and conserving resources.” She added, “In the future, when utilizing discharged groundwater as park water, we will also strengthen water quality and facility management in accordance with groundwater utilization guidelines.”
