As of 6 PM, 1,673 New COVID-19 Cases Reported... 48 More Than Yesterday


[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] From midnight to 6 p.m. on the 16th, 1,673 new COVID-19 cases were reported nationwide. This is 48 more than the 1,625 cases reported during the same time the previous day.


According to health authorities and local governments, 1,336 cases (79.9%) were reported in the metropolitan area, and 337 cases (20.1%) in non-metropolitan areas. By city and province, Seoul reported 625 cases, Gyeonggi 579, Incheon 132, Busan and Chungnam each 50, Gyeongbuk 36, Gyeongnam 34, Chungbuk 33, Gangwon 32, Daejeon 31, Daegu 29, Gwangju and Ulsan each 12, Jeonbuk 11, Jeonnam 6, and Jeju 1. All local governments except Sejong reported cases.


The daily number of cases has remained in the four digits for 72 consecutive days since recording 1,211 cases on July 7. The number of new cases reported daily over the past week were 1,892 → 1,864 → 1,755 → 1,433 → 1,497 → 2,079 → 1,943, averaging about 1,780 cases per day. The average daily number of locally transmitted cases, excluding imported cases, is around 1,749.


Cluster infections continue to occur in various everyday settings. In Seoul’s Songpa-gu Garak Market, 18 additional cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 185. Fourteen and twelve cases were reported at a workplace in Gwangjin-gu and a restaurant in Yongsan-gu, respectively. In Incheon, 12 cases were confirmed at a middle school in Yeonsu-gu, and 6 cases at a nursing hospital in Namdong-gu.
