Cumulative Rainfall Over 1000mm in Jeju Mountains Until 17th
Rain in Jeonnam and Gyeongnam from Morning, Jeonbuk and Gyeongbuk from Afternoon
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Typhoon 'Chantu' is passing south of Jeju Island on the 16th, bringing heavy rain to Jeju, the eastern part of Jeonnam, and the coastal areas of Gyeongnam until the 17th.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) forecasted that Typhoon Chantu will move westward at 10 km/h from about 370 km south-southwest of Seogwipo, passing south of Jeju on the 16th and crossing the Korea Strait tomorrow (17th).
The typhoon's path was revised as it moved further south than initially expected, passing south of Jeju rather than north. As of 3 a.m. on the 16th, the central pressure of Typhoon Chantu was 980 hPa, with maximum wind speeds of 29 m/s and a strong wind radius of 280 km. It is expected to pass about 280 km south-southwest of Seogwipo by 3 p.m. that day.
Jeju will experience rain until the afternoon of the 17th. Rain will begin in the Jeonnam and Gyeongnam regions from the morning of the 17th, spreading to Jeonbuk and Gyeongbuk in the afternoon, and expanding to most parts of the country by early morning the next day. The direct impact of the typhoon will be felt in Jeju from the afternoon of the 16th to daytime on the 17th, in the Jeolla region from early morning to afternoon on the 17th, and in the Gyeongsang region from morning to night on the 17th.
By the 17th, mountainous areas of Jeju are expected to receive up to 400 mm of rain, with other areas seeing 100 to 300 mm or more. The eastern part of Jeonnam and coastal areas of Gyeongnam will receive up to 80 mm, with some places exceeding 120 mm. Jeju will experience maximum instantaneous wind speeds exceeding 40 m/s, and the southern coast and eastern coast of Gyeongsang will have very strong winds of 20 to 30 m/s, requiring careful management of facilities.
By the 15th, Jeju's mountainous areas had already received over 600 mm of rain, with other areas seeing 100 to 350 mm. From the 13th to the 17th, cumulative rainfall is expected to total 200 to 600 mm nationwide, with Jeju's mountainous areas exceeding 1000 mm.
The KMA stated, "Along with heavy rain, some areas in Jeju will experience very heavy rainfall of 50 to 80 mm per hour from this afternoon until tomorrow morning," adding, "Be cautious of flooding in farmland and rapid currents, flooding due to delayed drainage, collapse of retaining walls or landslides, electric shock accidents, and vehicle engine stalls."
In the seas around Jeju, the southern part of the West Sea, the South Sea, and the southern part of the East Sea where typhoon or strong wind warnings have been issued, winds will blow very strongly at 12 to 26 m/s, and waves will rise very high at 2.0 to 8.0 m. Attention should be paid to damage to marine facilities such as docks, fish farms, and vessels. Thunder and lightning are expected in the seas around Jeju and the South Sea until the 17th.
The KMA warned, "Until the 17th, strong and heavy rain due to the typhoon will fall on the coasts of Jeju, the southern coast of Jeonnam, and the Gyeongsang coastal areas, and high waves coinciding with high tide may cause flooding in low-lying coastal areas," adding, "Depending on the typhoon Chantu's speed and direction, rainfall amounts, rainfall areas, and marine forecasts may change, so please refer to the upcoming typhoon and weather information."
The Seoul metropolitan area and the Yeongseo region of Gangwon Province will be clear but become cloudy from night. The 17th is expected to be mostly cloudy nationwide. On the 16th, the temperature difference in the central inland areas will exceed 10 degrees Celsius, so care should be taken for health during the seasonal transition. The daytime high temperature on the 16th is expected to be 24 to 29 degrees Celsius, and the morning low on the 17th is expected to be 15 to 22 degrees Celsius.
The KMA forecasted that on the afternoon of the Chuseok holiday on the 20th, the Seoul metropolitan area and the Yeongseo region of Gangwon will be mostly cloudy with rain. On the morning of the 21st, rain will fall over most parts of the country, but it is expected to stop in the Seoul metropolitan area and the Yeongdong region of Gangwon from the afternoon of that day.
