The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 12th that it will hold an awards ceremony for the '2021 Korea Green Architecture Competition,' which was open for submissions from May 7 to June 20, selecting 4 outstanding works in the completed building category and 18 outstanding works in the idea category.
In the green architecture completed building category, the 'Sustainable Library' by Dongwon Yukyounghoe Educational Foundation received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award, 'Yeouido Post Tower' by Korea Post received the Minister of Environment Award, and 'LG ThinQ Home' by LG Electronics was awarded the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award. Each winning work received a prize of 3 million KRW.
'Sustainable Library' is an eco-friendly green remodeling building with a building energy efficiency rating of 1+ and a Green Building Grade 4, improving the exterior and system aging of the existing building. 'Yeouido Post Tower' was evaluated as excellent with a building energy efficiency rating of 1++, the highest green building certification grade, and solar power generation.
'LG ThinQ Home' applied various active green building technologies under the concept of a future home to maintain optimal environment and energy performance. Additionally, 'Cheolsan Daycare Center in Gwangmyeong City' received an award and a prize of 1 million KRW from the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology for improving the environment through green remodeling and achieving high energy savings.
In the public idea category, Mr. Park Sung-jin's submission 'Apartment Without Cars' was selected for the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award, receiving a certificate and a prize of 2 million KRW. This work proposed a safe and eco-friendly housing design that transforms parking spaces in front of homes into parks and walking paths. It was highly evaluated by the judging panel as a green building idea that realizes carbon neutrality in daily life by encouraging the use of public transportation.
Other outstanding ideas selected included 'Inducing Economical Zero-Energy Buildings,' 'Carbon-Neutral Smart Farms Utilizing Old Collective Residential Complexes,' 'Energy-Producing Signboards,' and 'Revision of Design Standards to Improve Insulation Performance of Detached Houses by More Than 20%.'
Um Jeong-hee, Director of Building Policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, "We hope that through discovering various green building cases and expanding their base, green architecture will play a leading role in achieving carbon neutrality."
