[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] It has recently come to light that a woman in her 50s, who suffered side effects such as being unable to open her eyes properly after plastic surgery, made an extreme choice, causing a public outcry. The bereaved family has pointed out that the hospital’s medical records were inadequate and stated their intention to take legal action.
According to MBC's "News Desk" on the 9th, 55-year-old Park Mo left a suicide note in April saying, "Life is hard. I didn’t know plastic surgery would cause this kind of pain," before taking her own life. It was reported that she also sent messages to acquaintances during her lifetime saying, "I think the plastic surgery was ruined. I want to die," and "I can’t work or live with this face."
Earlier, Park underwent surgery to lift her eyelids and jawline at a plastic surgery clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, in March before starting a new job. However, after the surgery, she experienced severe pain, swelling, and bruising that did not subside easily. She even had difficulty fully opening or closing her eyes.
Initially, the hospital had promoted that "middle-aged eye plastic surgery allows for daily activities within a week."
The bereaved family claimed, "The hospital told (our mother) to 'just wait'." Park’s daughter said, "My mother said, 'It hurts, and I can’t fully close my eyes, and only half of my left eye opens,'" adding, "Mom thought she would be able to work. But this was a state where she couldn’t even go outside, so she struggled."
Additionally, the family pointed out that the hospital’s medical records were also inadequate. After Park’s death, the family reviewed the hospital’s medical records and found that the records only noted the surgery name and time two days before the surgery. On the day of the surgery, only the administration of anesthesia was recorded, with no basic details about the surgery itself.
The hospital stated that they had provided sufficient explanations about the surgery and that there were no issues with the medical records. However, the bereaved family is reportedly preparing for legal action.
Meanwhile, lawyer Son Youngseo, who is handling the case, said, "The medical records do not specify the treatment area, extent, or how the surgery was to be performed, which violates medical law."
