[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] SK Telecom announced on the 9th that it has obtained the international standard certification related to open source compliance (ISO/IEC 5230) from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Last year, ISO and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) adopted the specifications of the 'OpenChain Project,' led by the U.S. nonprofit organization Linux Foundation, as the only international standard (ISO/IEC 5230) related to open source compliance. The open source ISO standard evaluates ▲the adequacy of establishing open source policies and processes ▲whether a compliance system is built ▲and whether criteria for developer education and evaluation are met.
To meet these requirements, SK Telecom formed the Open Source Review Board (OSRB) earlier this year and established an in-house compliance system that stipulates principles for the use, contribution, and disclosure of open source. Additionally, SK Telecom has built an open source portal to disclose research and development results through open source and provides open source-related education to IT developers. The company also launched ‘DEVOCEAN,’ a developer support channel, actively facilitating communication and technology sharing between internal developers of SK Telecom and SK ICT family companies and external developers.
Recently, the importance of open source management systems has been increasingly emphasized, as global companies such as European automobile manufacturers require software suppliers to obtain open source ISO standard certification. In response, about 50 domestic and international ICT companies, including Google and Microsoft, have also quickly acquired the certification.
With the acquisition of the ISO certification, SK Telecom expects that the use of open source will expand further in core research and development fields with rapid technological changes, such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, quantum computing, and cloud, as it now has a more stable environment for utilizing open source.
Kim Yoon, CTO of SK Telecom, said, "Preparing for the transition to an AI company, SK Telecom strategically utilizes open source to adopt new technologies early and respond quickly to technological changes in AI, 5G, and cloud fields," adding, "SK Telecom will take the lead in expanding the open source ecosystem and creating social value through compliance with international open source standards and dissemination of know-how."
