Petitioner Appeals for Help Saying "Difficult to Receive Compensation Due to Challenges in Proving Causality"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A post claiming that a healthy woman in her 50s with no underlying conditions fell into a brain death state after suffering from headaches following her first Pfizer vaccine shot has been uploaded to the Blue House National Petition Board.
On the 7th, a post titled "(Age 50) Brain Death After First Pfizer Vaccination" was published on the Blue House National Petition Board.
The petitioner explained, "My mother received her first Pfizer vaccine on August 17, and five days after the vaccination, on August 22, she began experiencing headaches," adding, "At first, we thought it was just indigestion and went to a local clinic. She received injections and took medication, and we thought the symptoms were improving, but in the early morning of August 24, she began experiencing pain she had never felt before and was taken to a university hospital emergency room."
The petitioner continued, "An MRI was performed on August 30, and the hospital said 'there was no abnormality,' but at 3:30 a.m. on September 1, my mother began experiencing severe pain, vomited for 30 minutes, lost consciousness around 4 a.m., and suffered cardiac arrest."
The petitioner said, "CPR was performed immediately, and she was taken to the emergency room, but her heart stopped three times even there. Only then was a CT scan able to detect a brain hemorrhage (subarachnoid hemorrhage), and we were told that the bleeding was so severe that nothing could be done," adding, "My mother was talking to me right before she collapsed, and I still cannot believe this situation."
He added, "My mother, who was healthy without any special family history, underlying diseases, or common conditions like hypertension or diabetes, suddenly fell into a brain death state overnight," and expressed frustration, saying, "We went to the public health center to report the case, but the hospital refused to acknowledge a causal relationship with the Pfizer vaccine. The health center said they would try to report it as a mild case since it cannot be reported as a severe case, but the possibility of recognition seems low."
Finally, mentioning that it is difficult to receive compensation for damages due to issues such as causality even if side effects occur after COVID vaccination, the petitioner requested help, saying, "I hope the public will support so that such incidents do not happen in the future, and if they do, appropriate compensation can be received."
Meanwhile, on the 31st of last month, Jo Eun-hee, head of the Safety Vaccination Management Team at the Central Disease Control Headquarters, said in a briefing that although there are cases where causality is recognized for vaccine side effects such as anaphylaxis or myocarditis, the number of cases is very small, so there is no need to worry.
Jo said, "As of the 27th review by the damage investigation team last week, out of 536 deaths, causality was recognized in 2 cases," adding, "If a stroke or similar occurs within a few days after vaccination, it is suspected to be caused by the vaccine, but these diseases commonly occur in Korea and can be fatal, so after preparing data, we will provide statistical correlation information."
