[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] The prosecution has requested a prison sentence again in the appeal trial for singer Wheesung (39, Choi Hweseong), who was indicted for habitual use of propofol.
On the 8th, the prosecution requested a three-year prison sentence at the first appeal trial of Wheesung held at the Daegu District Court Criminal Appeal Division 5 (Chief Judge Kim Seong-yeol).
Previously, Wheesung purchased about 670ml of propofol for 10 million won from Mr. A, whom he contacted after seeing an internet advertisement in front of a hotel in Songpa-gu, Seoul, in 2019. By the end of November of the same year, he had purchased a total of 3,910ml for 60.5 million won in 12 transactions. It was also revealed that he injected the propofol about 10 times.
In the first trial, Wheesung was sentenced to one year in prison with two years of probation, 40 hours of community service, and 40 hours of drug treatment lectures on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act (psychotropic substances). However, the prosecution appealed, arguing that "the original sentence was too light and unfair."
On the 8th, the prosecution requested the court to "overturn the original judgment and sentence Wheesung to three years in prison with a fine of 60.5 million won."
On the other hand, the defense attorney appealed, "Although the defendant made a big mistake, he is reflecting on it and has been volunteering at a welfare facility for the disabled since the first trial to regain his composure," adding, "He is continuing treatment and his prognosis is quite good. We ask for leniency just this once."
In his final statement, Wheesung said, "I have reflected on my mistakes a hundred, a thousand times. I am very ashamed and regretful," and added, "What I am grateful for through this incident is that I have been determined and continuously treated for over a year for various mental disorders such as lifelong insomnia, severe panic disorder, and depression, which had tormented me."
He continued, "I have been going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, living the same routine for nearly two years," and added, "I hope I can continue living like this. I will keep trying endlessly. I ask for leniency."
Earlier, the first trial court stated, "Considering the nature of his profession, he must continue to receive public love, and the burden and pressure that every action could be criticized by the public were severe. It appears he became addicted to propofol while overcoming chronic insomnia and depression caused by this. He belatedly repented and reflected on his mistakes, has been receiving sincere treatment, and the possibility of relapse is low," summarizing these points.
Meanwhile, the sentencing hearing for Wheesung's appeal trial will be held on the morning of the 13th of next month.
