[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The government launched a nationwide inspection on the 8th ahead of Chuseok, focusing on construction and waste disposal industries where industrial accident fatalities frequently occur.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that on the occasion of the '5th On-site Inspection Day,' it is checking compliance with the three major safety measures at these workplaces nationwide.
Since July, the ministry has been conducting On-site Inspection Days every other Wednesday to check the three major safety measures, including fall and entrapment prevention and wearing protective gear. From the 30th of last month to the 31st of next month, a 'Focused Crackdown Period on High-risk Workplaces' will be implemented.
This inspection focused on construction, waste disposal, roof renovation, and logging work?industries with frequent industrial accident fatalities?to prevent such accidents occurring around the Chuseok holiday. Kwon Gisub, head of the Ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health Headquarters, stated, "There is a tendency for industrial accident fatalities to increase before the Chuseok holiday. All workplaces nationwide must carefully verify safety measures to prevent unforeseen accidents."
The ministry will also release analysis data on industrial accident fatalities occurring before and after the Chuseok holiday. Head Kwon said, "During the upcoming focused crackdown period, if industrial accident fatalities caused by violations of the three major safety measures occur and the necessity for detention is met, we will confirm the employer’s intent and apply for arrest warrants, taking strict judicial actions."
