[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] Muan County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 7th that 3 billion KRW of national funding has been included in the government budget for the installation of non-point source pollution reduction facilities to improve water quality around Changpoho Lake near Muan International Airport.
Non-point source pollution refers to pollution caused by pesticides sprayed on farmland and livestock waste runoff that flow into water bodies with rainwater, causing water pollution. Non-point source pollution reduction facilities are designed to suppress the inflow of non-point source pollutants, which are discharged indiscriminately over wide areas, into rivers.
So far, the county has continuously requested the Ministry of Environment and the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office to install non-point source pollution reduction facilities to improve water quality around Changpoho Lake. As a result, 3 billion KRW of national funding was reflected in this year’s government budget.
The total project cost is 6 billion KRW (3 billion KRW national funding, 3 billion KRW county funding), and the county plans to complete the non-point source pollution reduction facilities by 2024 once the project budget is finalized.
Governor Kim San said, “If the project is successfully carried out, non-point source pollutants around the lake will be removed, bringing us one step closer to creating a natural ecological waterfront space for the residents,” and added, “We will do our best to ensure that the installation project of non-point source pollution reduction facilities around Changpoho Lake, a long-standing wish of the residents, is finally approved by the National Assembly.”
