KT Launches Pilot Project for 'AI Smart Parking Management System' in Vladivostok

[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] KT announced on the 5th that it will promote a pilot project for the ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) Smart Parking Management System’ with the Vladivostok City Government in Russia.

This pilot project aims to improve the efficiency of parking lots operating within Vladivostok to reduce traffic congestion, and is being carried out jointly by KT, Silicon Cube, the Russian Far East Development Corporation, and the Vladivostok City Government.

KT will supply the intelligent traffic control system, and Silicon Cube will support the AI solution specialized for parking. The Russian Far East Development Corporation plans to play a key role in resolving licensing and regulatory issues so that this project can be expanded to other cities.

The pilot project will be conducted at a parking lot near the Zolotoy Bridge in Vladivostok. It will operate by simultaneously applying AI-based license plate recognition technology and vehicle detection technology to collect information on vehicles entering and exiting the parking lot and monitor the status of parking spaces. Through this, it is expected to effectively reduce urban traffic congestion caused by vehicles waiting to enter and exit parking lots.

Silicon Cube predicted that if the ‘AI Smart Parking Management System’ is expanded to the entire city of Vladivostok, it would improve about 25% or more of the overall traffic flow in the city.

The Vladivostok City Government expects that data analysis using various types of information such as hourly usage rates and congestion levels of parking lots, as well as the types of vehicles using them, will help streamline the parking system framework.

Additionally, parking space information will be provided to drivers through large organic light-emitting diode (LED) screens installed inside the parking lots, which is expected to enhance the convenience of Vladivostok citizens using the parking facilities.

KT, Silicon Cube, and the Russian Far East Development Corporation plan to continuously cooperate to solve traffic problems through the expansion of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), including successfully operating the pilot project and promoting the main project.

Im Jong-yoon, CEO of Silicon Cube, said, “Through cooperation with KT, we will successfully complete the pilot project and expand the AI Smart Parking Management System business to major Russian cities including Moscow.”

Moon Sung-wook, Head of KT’s Global Business Division, said, “This pilot project in Vladivostok is significant as it establishes a Russian base for KT’s growth as a global digital platform company (DIGICO). We will strive to expand the introduction of ITS at the city and provincial levels that helps alleviate traffic congestion in Russia by utilizing KT’s strengths in AI, big data, and cloud technologies.”
