Construction of the Dongbuk Line Urban Railway Connecting Wangsimni Station in Seongdong-gu to Sanggye Station in Nowon-gu Officially Begins... 13.4km Section with 16 Stations, Travel from Wangsimni to Sanggye-dong in Just 25 Minutes
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced on the 5th that the construction of the Dongbuk Line urban railway, connecting Wangsimni Station and Nowon-gu Sanggye Station, officially began on the 23rd of last month.
The Dongbuk Line urban railway, starting from Wangsimni Station, consists of a total of 16 stations over a 13.4 km section. It passes through Majang Post Office within the district, then continues through Jegidong Station, Korea University Station, Miasageori Station, Wolgye Station, and Hagye Station, reaching Sanggye Station. Once opened, it will take only 25 minutes to travel from Wangsimni to Sanggye-dong.
To ensure smooth progress of the construction at Wangsimni Station, the bus stop opposite Seongdong-gu Office was relocated 100 meters forward to in front of the Danammae Building near Exit 2 of Wangsimni Station, minimizing inconvenience to residents. The project was actively promoted to residents through banners and signboards, and notices were attached to buses passing through the bus stop to reduce confusion among residents.
With the Dongbuk Line construction targeted for completion in 2025, it is expected to improve public transportation convenience in the transportation-disadvantaged northeastern part of Seoul, alleviate severe traffic congestion in densely populated residential areas, and contribute to balanced regional development by connecting Lines 1, 2, 4 to 7, the Gyeongwon Line, and the Bundang Line.
In particular, Wangsimni Station, where four lines (Lines 2 and 5, Gyeongui-Jungang Line, and Bundang Line) stop, serves as a large-scale transfer hub used by approximately 180 million passengers annually. With the opening of the Dongbuk Line urban railway in 2025 and the confirmation of the currently underway Metropolitan Area Express Railway GTX-C Line, it is expected to become a genuine hub for metropolitan area wide transportation.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “With the opening of the Dongbuk Line at Wangsimni Station, the center of the metropolitan transportation network, transportation convenience for metropolitan citizens will be maximized, and the status of Wangsimni Station will be further elevated.” He added, “Until the completion of the Dongbuk Line urban railway project, we will do our best to minimize residents’ inconvenience and ensure the stable progress of the construction.”
