[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Lee In-guk (26, Ansan City Disabled Sports Association) finished 5th in the 100m backstroke at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
On the afternoon of the 2nd, Lee In-guk recorded a time of 1:00.98 in the men's 100m backstroke (sports classification S14) final held at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in Japan, finishing 5th. James Benjamin Hans from Australia set a new Paralympic record and won the gold medal with a time of 57.73 seconds. Viacheslav Emeliantsev (59.05 seconds, Russian Paralympic Committee) took silver, and Rhys Dunn (59.97 seconds, Great Britain) earned the bronze medal.
Lee In-guk advanced to the final, which was contested by the top 8 swimmers, by touching the pad at 1:00.62 in the morning heats, ranking 3rd overall.
Meanwhile, Lee In-guk won the gold medal in his main event, the 100m backstroke, at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
Paralympic swimming events are broadly classified into three categories. S stands for freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly; SB stands for breaststroke; and SM stands for individual medley. The number next to the letter indicates the type and severity of the disability: 1 to 10 for physical disabilities, 11 to 13 for visual impairments, and 14 for intellectual disabilities. The lower the number, the more severe the disability.
