‘Smart Label Package’ Also Selected as Best of the Best

Ten Days Later, ‘Milk’ Makes You ‘ill’... Dongseo University Team Wins Top Prize at World Design Exhibition with ‘Smart Label’ Submission Dongseo University students who won awards at the international design competition.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Dongseo University students are making a big "impact" on the global design scene. Their "award" count is snowballing.

Dongseo University announced on the 2nd that its students won a total of three main awards at the 2021 Red Dot Award, one of the world's top three design competitions.

Among the three works, the "Smart Label Package" was also selected as Best of the Best, an honor given to only the top 0.1% of main award winners.

The German Red Dot Design Award is considered one of the world's top three design competitions, alongside the German iF Design Award and the American IDEA Design Award.

This year, over 8,000 works were submitted from more than 50 countries worldwide to the Red Dot Design Competition.

Twenty-four of the world's best creators judged the entries with a "hawk's eye."

Among them, Dongseo University students competed with global creators and achieved the distinction of being selected as three winners, including Best of the Best.

The award-winning Smart Label Package was created by students Lee Young-jun, Lee Seo-young, Ha Eun-byeol, Jo Dong-ha, and Park Jun-hyuk. Teddy Buddy was submitted by Ahn Chi-hyun, Heo Seon-yoon, Jo Ho-jung, and Lee Eun-chae, and Animal Guardians (Sanbuljikimi) was submitted by Son Young-min, Lim Soo-bin, Park Ga-bin, and Kim Min-seok, standing out among 8,000 entries.

The award-winning works were the result of the "Ideation Convergence Practice" course, part of Dongseo University's LINC+ Convergence Education Program.

Professor Ryu Do-sang from the Department of Advertising and Public Relations and Professor Moon Mi-kyung from the Department of Software each led teams of their students in the projects.

Over the past seven years (2015?2021), Dongseo University has set a remarkable record by winning a total of 16 works at the Red Dot Award.

The Smart Label Package idea came from the observation that children do not recognize the concept of milk expiration dates.

The expiration date is printed very small, so many consume milk without knowing its condition.

The team proposed a "Smart Label Package" by applying thermochromic ink to the milk package, which changes the word "Milk" to "ill" after the 10-day expiration period. It clearly informs that the "milk" has turned "sick or spoiled" after the expiration time.

The Animal Guardians (Sanbuljikimi) work is an idea to detect forest fires early with the help of animals. After treating wild animals injured by traps and other wounds, they are fitted with "Animal Guardians" sensors and released.

When a fire breaks out in the forest, the sensor worn on the animal's neck detects it and transmits the fire location.

The Teddy Buddy work addresses the need for long-term hospitalized child patients to have friends who can talk and play with them, not just guardians.

Through the medium of "dolls," which children feel most familiar with, the idea is to connect hospitalized child patients and friends outside the hospital via a messenger.

Lee Young-jun (Department of Advertising and Public Relations) said, "I am so moved to receive the higher award (Best of the Best), and the course will remain an unforgettable memory."

The award-winning works will be listed in the 2021/2022 Reddot Brand & Communications Yearbook and introduced worldwide through online and permanent exhibitions.

Each awardee will be registered as a Red Dot International Member and receive various benefits, and the Best of the Best work will be permanently exhibited at the Red Dot Museum in Berlin, Germany.

The Red Dot Design Award ceremony, gala show, and exhibition of winning works are scheduled to be held on November 2 in Berlin.
