[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Son Seon-hee] Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum announced on the 2nd, "We will conduct a comprehensive inspection of two-wheeled vehicles (motorcycles, etc.) to update owner information and enforce the discontinuation of unused vehicles." This measure was introduced in response to the sharp increase in motorcycle-related accidents following the surge in delivery service demand after the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the morning of the same day, Prime Minister Kim presided over the 132nd Government Policy Coordination Meeting at the Government Seoul Office and said, "I hope that two-wheeled vehicles will shed the stigma of being 'time bombs on the road.'"
Prime Minister Kim stated, "The fatality rate from two-wheeled vehicle accidents is more than twice that of regular cars," adding, "There is an urgent need for extraordinary measures to raise awareness among two-wheeled vehicle drivers." He continued, "The government has established a systematic and proactive management system from registration to scrapping, referencing cases from advanced countries," and announced, "We will strengthen crackdowns on illegal two-wheeled vehicles such as those unregistered or without license plates, and implement measures including significantly increasing fines upon detection."
He also added, "We will introduce safety inspections and a two-wheeled vehicle maintenance certification system to prevent accidents caused by illegal modifications and vehicle defects, and implement a scrapping system to block the operation of old vehicles and unauthorized abandonment."
