[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Kim Hwangsu) announced on the 1st that it conducted a "special crackdown on drunk driving" from July 15 to the 31st of last month, apprehending 261 people.

During this special crackdown, a total of 261 people were caught, of which 165 had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher (license cancellation), and 96 had between 0.03% and 0.08% (license suspension).

In particular, starting from the 18th of last month, with the elevation of social distancing to Level 4 in the Jeju area, restricting private gatherings of three or more people after 6 p.m., special drunk driving crackdowns were conducted during daytime hours.

On the first day of the crackdown, the 18th of last month, a total of 3 cases (3 suspensions) were caught, and on the 28th and 29th of last month, a total of 6 cases (2 cancellations, 4 suspensions) were apprehended, resulting in a total of 24 people caught for drunk driving during daytime hours alone.

Drunk driving traffic accidents showed a significant decrease in both the number of incidents and casualties compared to the same period last year.

While drunk driving crackdowns increased by 81 cases (45.0%) from 180 cases in the same period last year to 261 cases, drunk driving traffic accidents decreased by 29 cases (53.7%) from 54 cases in the same period last year to 25 cases.

Jeju Police plans to continue crackdowns on drunk driving while paying attention to COVID-19 infection prevention measures such as using contactless breathalyzers, aiming to eradicate drunk driving.

With the extension of social distancing Level 4, special crackdowns on drunk driving during daytime hours will also continue.

Unannounced simultaneous crackdowns will be conducted throughout Jeju (including urban and mid-mountain areas) during daytime hours on both weekdays and weekends.

Chief Kang Hwangsu stated, "Drunk driving is a serious criminal act that can instantly take away not only one's own precious life and property but also those of others," and added, "Please remember that it is a 'time bomb' that can lead to a major accident anytime and anywhere, and I urge you never to get behind the wheel even after drinking just one glass of alcohol."
