[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Samsung Electronics is joining forces with Korea University to develop eco-friendly home appliance technologies.

On the 1st, Samsung Electronics announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) the previous day at Korea University's Engineering Building in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, to establish an 'Eco-friendly Energy Research Center.'

The two parties will conduct joint research to develop eco-friendly technologies, a key trend in next-generation home appliances, and will promote various activities such as specialized technical workshops and seminars. They also plan to open customized education programs to nurture talent in this field.

The research projects include ▲ improving energy efficiency of core components in major appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners ▲ strengthening eco-friendly material technologies such as expanding the use of recycled plastics and developing resource-circulating packaging ▲ developing air conditioner components applying eco-friendly refrigerants with low Global Warming Potential (GWP).

Additionally, to explore technological cooperation methods to achieve 'carbon neutrality,' various departments including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Industrial Management Engineering will participate to plan and research convergence technology projects.

Lee Ki-soo, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Home Appliance Business Division, said, "We expect great synergy from Samsung Electronics and Korea University, both possessing excellent research capabilities, in developing eco-friendly technologies that will lead the future home appliance industry." He added, "Samsung Electronics will continue to strive to proactively secure convergence technologies in various fields through industry-academia cooperation with leading universities at home and abroad."
