[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] Following a mass food poisoning incident at a gimbap specialty store in Bundang, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province last month, 30 customers at a gimbap restaurant in Goyang also showed symptoms of food poisoning, with one person dying.
According to Goyang City on the 26th, a woman in her 20s, Ms. A, who used a gimbap restaurant in Deogyang-gu, Goyang City, showed symptoms of food poisoning on the 25th and died, and 29 other customers who used the same place are also experiencing symptoms of food poisoning.
Ms. A used the gimbap restaurant in Deogyang-gu around 6 p.m. on the 23rd and began showing symptoms such as high fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain from the night of the next day. At 12:30 a.m. on the 25th, she visited the emergency room of a general hospital in Goyang City but returned home.
However, around noon on the 25th, her husband found Ms. A collapsed at their home, and although she was transported to the hospital she had visited the day before, she eventually passed away. The police are currently investigating the cause of Ms. A’s death.
As a result of an investigation by health authorities targeting customers who visited the gimbap restaurant Ms. A had been to, it was confirmed that 29 additional people showed symptoms of food poisoning by noon that day.
Some of these individuals exhibited symptoms such as high fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and were transported to hospitals by 119 emergency vehicles. Currently, health authorities have secured 29 specimens from these individuals and have requested testing from the Northern Support Division of the Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment.
Earlier, from the 29th of last month to the 2nd of this month, 276 people who ate gimbap at two branches of a gimbap specialty store in Bundang-gu showed symptoms of food poisoning, and about 40 were hospitalized for treatment. Among 24 food poisoning patients who used one branch of this gimbap specialty store, Salmonella bacteria were detected in specimens from 13 people, and in the other branch, Salmonella bacteria were found in specimens from 5 out of 10 people.
A Goyang City official explained, "It has been identified as a gimbap specialty store unrelated to the Bundang gimbap store," and added, "We are checking whether there were any issues with the ingredients."
