[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, 'chabak'?camping inside cars?has become popular. However, controversy has arisen after a resident of an apartment complex posted photos of a drinking party held in the ground-level parking lot, claiming to enjoy the atmosphere in the rain.
On the 23rd, a post was uploaded in a 'chabak' camping community, sharing a review of camping in the apartment complex's ground parking lot. The author wrote, "Since it was raining, I went out with a friend carrying kimchi pancakes and Makgeolli," adding, "Just in case, I set up a tarp on top of the car, so we didn't get wet from the rain that came in the early morning."
The photos shared by the author show a portable gas burner with a frying pan cooking kimchi pancakes. Various side dishes such as Makgeolli, chicken, salad, and kimchi are also placed on the table. The post was published at 3:45 PM, suggesting that the Makgeolli party took place earlier that morning.
When a member of the caf? commented, "Isn't cooking prohibited in the apartment?" the author replied, "I didn't know (cooking was prohibited). The security guard didn't say anything either."
After the post spread online, netizens responded negatively, saying things like "The parking lot is dangerous," "That's a nuisance," and "It could cause a fire if done improperly."
Meanwhile, local governments have recently been troubled by travelers who go 'chabak' and leave their trash behind. Especially in Gangwon-do, known as a popular 'chabak' destination, authorities have taken measures such as closing restrooms or blocking entrances to prevent campers from entering after travelers damaged nature by carelessly discarding garbage.
