On the 23rd (local time), Steven Lyons, commander of the U.S. Army Transportation Command, mentioned in a video briefing that there was a report of one baby being born during evacuation and stated, "In fact, there are more than that."
When reporters asked, "Does that mean more than one?" Commander Lyons replied, "The last data I received was three," adding, "I don't have official records, but I will keep you informed."
Even amid the extreme chaos of the evacuation operation following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan, new lives have been born one after another, bringing joy to the exhausted evacuees and support personnel.
Earlier, CNN reported that a pregnant woman who escaped Afghanistan on a U.S. Air Force C-17 transport plane safely gave birth immediately after landing at the Ramstein U.S. Air Force base in Germany.
Regarding questions about threats encountered during the evacuation operation, Commander Lyons mentioned that the threats are serious but declined to provide specific details.
However, he emphasized, "Our personnel are the best in the world, and the C-17 is also the best in the world," adding, "I am confident that appropriate measures are being taken to mitigate threats."
Commander Lyons stated that more than 200 aircraft, including transport planes and KC-10 aerial refueling tankers, are currently deployed in the evacuation operation, with Air Force personnel providing support around the clock.
He added, "The support personnel are exhausted, and some are probably completely worn out."
