Statistics Korea Announces '2021 First Half Regional Employment Survey'
Youth Employment Share Below 10% in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon and Gijang-gun, Busan
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The region with the highest unemployment rate was found to be Siheung, Gyeonggi Province. Additionally, Bonghwa-gun in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Boseong-gun in Jeollanam-do were surveyed to have a youth employment ratio of less than 3%.
Statistics Korea announced on the 24th the "2021 First Half Regional Employment Survey: Major Employment Indicators by City and County" containing these details. The report analyzed major employment indicators for 228 cities, counties, and districts.
According to the compiled results, the employment rate in city areas in the first half of last year was 59.7%, and in county areas, it was 67.3%, each rising by 1.4 percentage points compared to the same period the previous year.
During the same period, the number of employed persons in city areas was 13,128,000, and in county areas, 2,068,000, increasing by 3.6% (459,000 persons) and 1.4% (29,000 persons) respectively compared to the previous year.
While the number of unemployed persons in both city and county areas increased, the unemployment rate either remained the same or decreased compared to the previous year. The number of unemployed in city areas was 483,000, an increase of 8,000 from the same period last year. In county areas, it was 32,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous year.
The unemployment rate in city areas recorded 3.5%, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared to the same period last year, whereas the unemployment rate in county areas remained unchanged at 1.5% compared to the same period last year.
Looking at the youth employment ratio by province, Bonghwa-gun in Gyeongsangbuk-do recorded 3.1%, and Boseong-gun in Jeollanam-do recorded 3.9%, indicating very low levels. In contrast, Cheongju-si in Chungcheongbuk-do and Suwon-si in Gyeonggi Province recorded 16.8% and 16.7%, respectively.
Regarding the youth employment ratio by metropolitan city and special city, Gwanak-gu in Seoul recorded 25.5%, and Yuseong-gu in Daejeon recorded 18.7%, which were high, while Ganghwa-gun in Incheon (5.7%) and Gijang-gun in Busan (9.2%) were low.
