[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Gender Equality Education Deliberation Committee will take on the role of reviewing policies related to sexual violence within schools.
On the 24th, the Ministry of Education announced that it had reviewed and approved a partial amendment to the 'Gender Equality Education Deliberation Committee Regulations' at the Cabinet meeting.
The core content of the amendment is that, in order to respond to ongoing sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools as well as new types of digital sex crimes, the Gender Equality Education Deliberation Committee will henceforth review matters related to the eradication and prevention of sexual harassment and sexual violence within schools. The committee is an organization operated under the Framework Act on Education, composed of 5 government members and 15 civilian members, and has played a role in deliberating matters related to the promotion of gender equality education.
The amendment added to the committee’s role the promotion of educational policies and institutional improvements for the prevention of sexual harassment and sexual violence in the field of school education, as well as matters concerning educational content and methods. To efficiently carry out the committee’s work, a 'Gender Equality Education Policy Subcommittee' and a 'School Education Field Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence Eradication and Prevention Subcommittee' will be established.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye stated, "It is meaningful that the committee reviews policies for the eradication and prevention of sexual harassment and sexual violence in school education in connection with gender equality education, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of policies in the school field." She added, "The Ministry of Education will continue efforts to eradicate sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools and strive to create a safe school environment."
