Ministry of the Interior and Safety Launches First Support Project for Local Youth Activists... 20 Organizations Selected for Up to 45 Million KRW Funding

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 24th that it will launch the 'Local Youth Activist Support Project' for the first time this year through public-private collaboration to solve community issues, and will recruit youth organizations to participate in the project starting from the 25th.

The 'Local Youth Activist Support Project' is a joint initiative by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Samsung Life Insurance, and the Social Solidarity Bank through a business agreement, designed to support youth activists leading efforts to solve community problems.

The Ministry plans to select 20 nonprofit organizations led by local youth activists annually through a public contest, providing up to 45 million KRW per organization for project expenses, as well as necessary education and mentoring for their activities.

The application fields must align with public interest themes such as local economy, jobs, education, urban regeneration, tourism, youth culture, and environment. Eligibility requirements include: ▲ youth representatives aged 34 or younger as of the application date (co-representatives allowed), ▲ registered domicile and location outside Seoul and metropolitan cities, and ▲ meeting nonprofit organization criteria such as incorporated associations, foundations, nonprofit private organizations, voluntary groups, or social cooperatives.

The selection process will proceed with document screening and on-site inspections in October, followed by interviews in December. The funding amount will be determined through the evaluation process and project adjustments. Selected organizations will begin activities in January 2022, and after approximately one year of activity, evaluations will be conducted with benefits such as awards and an additional one-year extension of support.

The project briefing session is scheduled to be held online on September 3rd, and organizations wishing to attend must pre-register on a separate application page by the 31st.

Minister Jeon Hae-cheol stated, “Collaborating between the public and private sectors to identify and solve local issues is a new model of community innovation,” adding, “I especially hope that various stakeholders, centered on local youth, will join forces to create local jobs and revitalize the regional economy.”
