[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] A man in his 40s who caused a fatal traffic accident while driving under the influence has been apprehended.
Today (21st), the Gimhae West Police Station in Gyeongnam announced that they have arrested and are investigating Mr. A (40) on charges of hit-and-run causing death under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. Mr. A is accused of driving under the influence at around 9:05 PM on the 20th and colliding with another vehicle while changing lanes on a road in Heungdong, Gimhae City.
Mr. A did not stop there; while fleeing the scene, he is also accused of consecutively rear-ending two other passenger cars waiting at a traffic signal nearby. As a result, a victim in their 60s who was in one of the cars was transported to a nearby hospital but ultimately passed away, and about two others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the hospital.
After hitting three cars, Mr. A reportedly left the scene without providing any aid. He later turned himself in at the police station around 11 PM the following day. At that time, his blood alcohol concentration was reportedly at the license cancellation level (0.08% or higher).
The police believe Mr. A fled the scene fearing that his drunk driving would be discovered after causing the accident. They have applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A and are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
