[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] On the 20th, Lee Tae-gyu, a member of the People Power Party, resigned from all party positions, including Secretary-General and Supreme Council member.

The People Party stated on the same day, "After consulting with Ahn Cheol-soo, the leader of the People Party, Representative Lee decided to step down from his party positions." The People Party also announced, "(Representative Lee) will continue to fulfill his responsibilities and roles as a member of the People Party without change."

Choi Yeon-sook has been nominated as the successor Secretary-General.

Through social media (SNS), Representative Lee said, "After the merger between the People Party and the People Power Party fell through, I have spent a period of deep reflection," adding, "I will step down from all party positions to take time to contemplate what ‘regime change as a better future option’ means and to gather my thoughts."

A People Party official said, "It seems that Representative Lee withdrew his efforts after the merger encountered difficulties," and added, "I understand this decision was made after more than a week of careful consideration."

Inside and outside the People Party, it is known that Representative Lee had maintained the view that a merger with the People Power Party was necessary within the party. For this reason, it is speculated that disappointment over the failure of the merger also influenced his resignation.
