Selection of Contractors for 'Gangneung Sections 1 and 2' in the Gangneung~Jejin Railway Construction Project

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The contractor for Sections 1 and 2 of the Gangneung~Jejin railway construction project has been selected.

According to Gangneung City on the 19th, the Korea Rail Network Authority selected the successful bidders for Sections 1, 2, and 4 (Sections 1 and 2 in Gangneung City) out of the four sections (total of 9 sections) for the design and construction turnkey (T/K) contract of the single-track Gangneung~Jejin railway construction on the 17th.

Section 1 was awarded to the Gyeryong Construction consortium for the 7.7 km stretch from Namgangneung Signal Station to the Gangneung Station area, with a project cost of 283.8 billion KRW. Section 2 was awarded to the Geukdong Construction consortium for the 12.4 km stretch from Gyodong (Gangneung Station area) to Bangnae-ri, Yeongok-myeon, with a project cost of 220 billion KRW.

Notably, Section 2 (Gyodong~Bangnae-ri, Yeongok-myeon) was originally planned in the basic plan as "earthworks = 3.41 km, bridges = 1.79 km, underground tunnel = 7.2 km," but the project contractor proposed a full underground plan for the entire 12.4 km section, which is expected to significantly alleviate private property infringement, regional disconnection, and forest damage.

Accordingly, it is anticipated that the basic and detailed design for the connecting Section 3 (Bangnae-ri, Yeongok-myeon ~ Hyeonnam-myeon, Yangyang-gun) will also be partially revised.

Section 1, from Namgangneung Signal Station to the Gangneung Station area, is scheduled to commence construction in the second half of the year.
