[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Three villages in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam, have been selected as ‘2021 Green Villages Without Forest Fires’ by the Korea Forest Service.

On the 17th, Sancheong-gun announced that Boan Village in Sicheon-myeon, Sogwi Village in Danseong-myeon, and Beoppyeong Village in Saengbiryang-myeon were selected as Green Villages.

Meanwhile, Boan Village received high praise for having no forest fire incidents at all, as all village residents, led by village chief Jeong Chul-yeol, voluntarily engaged in village environment maintenance and forest fire prevention activities.

In particular, not only forest fire prevention activities but also efforts to gather residents’ opinions, manage major events, and improve welfare for marginalized groups were reflected in the evaluation.

Currently, in Sancheong-gun, in addition to the three villages selected as Green Villages this time, a total of 19 villages have been designated as Green Villages Without Forest Fires, leading the way in forest fire prevention.

The Korea Forest Service has been conducting this program since 2014 to encourage voluntary participation of communities centered on village representatives.

A county official said, “Voluntary participation of residents is the most important factor in preventing forest fires in rural areas,” and added, “We will continue to increase resident participation to create a forest fire-free Sancheong-gun.”
