From Hydrogen Electric Boats to Fuel Packs... 10 Companies Advance to Finals of 'H2 Innovation Award'

[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] The Hydrogen Mobility Show Organizing Committee announced on the 17th that it has selected 10 finalists for the 'H2 Innovation Award,' which is being promoted to discover innovative companies and technologies in the global hydrogen industry sector.

The H2 Innovation Award is a technology presentation and awards ceremony targeting domestic and international large, medium, and small enterprises as well as startups in the hydrogen mobility, hydrogen refueling infrastructure, and hydrogen energy fields, which are gaining attention as carbon-neutral and future eco-friendly sectors. The award is jointly hosted by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA), Hydrogen Convergence Alliance Promotion Group, Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT), and Korea Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP).

According to the organizing committee, based on the application forms and technology introduction documents submitted by individual companies, 10 finalists were selected after reviewing innovation, technology, marketability, and potential for development. By category: ▲Hydrogen Mobility sector ? Vinsen (Korea), Hyundai Mobis (Korea), Hoeviger (Germany) ▲Hydrogen Refueling Infrastructure sector ? Donghwa Entec (Korea), Magma (UK), Samjung ENC (Korea), Korea Gas Corporation-Doosan Fuel Cell (Korea) ▲Hydrogen Energy sector ? BKM (Korea), Kraft Powercon (Sweden), POSCO SPS (Korea).

Specifically, Hyundai Mobis submitted a '50 kW-class hydrogen fuel cell power pack' utilizing the hydrogen fuel cell system of the hydrogen electric vehicle Nexo. The prototype 5-ton hydrogen forklift produced using this has a full charge time about 1/120th of the existing time (approximately within 5 minutes), and the operating time is improved by 25% to 1 hour. Vinsen, a specialist in eco-friendly electric and hydrogen small vessels, submitted a 'hydrogen electric hybrid leisure boat.' This boat has a top speed of 10 knots and an operating time of about 3 hours.

Additionally, Hoeviger submitted a 'Hydrogen Pressure Control Unit (HPCU),' Donghwa Entec a 'Hydrogen Pre-cooler for Hydrogen Refueling Stations (H2 Pre-cooler),' Magma a 'Catalyst for Hydrogen Reformer for Fuel Cells,' Samjung ENC a 'Cooling Device for Mobile Explosion-proof Hydrogen Gas Refueling Stations,' Korea Gas Corporation-Doosan Fuel Cell a combined energy solution 'Tri-gen,' BKM an 'Edge AI-based Real-time Diagnosis and Control Integrated Solution,' Kraft Powercon a 'Hydrogen Water Electrolysis Power Supply Solution,' and POSCO SPS a 'Precision Rolling and Forming Manufacturing Technology for Fuel Cell Bipolar Plates.'

The finalist companies will hold presentations at the '2021 Hydrogen Mobility+ Show' held at KINTEX in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province on the 9th of next month. Based on this, the organizing committee will conduct a final evaluation and award one company the Excellence Award with a prize of 1 million KRW, and one company that ranks first in the overall evaluation as the 'Most Innovative Company' will receive the Grand Prize and a prize of 3 million KRW.

An official from the organizing committee stated, "The H2 Innovation Award not only discovers and awards excellent companies but also naturally highlights the new technologies and products possessed by companies at each stage through a selection process that leads from presentations to exhibitions and networking." He added, "Ultimately, the goal is to create a virtuous cycle where outstanding technologies and products of leading companies in the hydrogen sector are first revealed or gain attention at the H2 Award."
