[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Ju-hyung] Dr. Oh Eun-young, known as the so-called 'National Childcare Mentor,' has been embroiled in controversy over her high consultation fees. Amid this, a netizen posted a supportive message saying, "It was the most valuable 810,000 won of my life," drawing attention. The netizen emphasized that considering Dr. Oh's expertise and the effectiveness of her consultations, the fee is by no means expensive.
On the 10th, a post titled "The Most Valuable 810,000 Won of Our Life" was uploaded on an online community. The author, who had experience receiving consultation services from Dr. Oh, stated, "Dr. Oh's consultation fee is 90,000 won per 10 minutes, and I paid 810,000 won for a 90-minute first consultation."
They continued, "I mobilized five friends, my husband, three of my husband's colleagues, and my family from my hometown to make over 200 calls each to successfully make a reservation," and explained, "Dr. Oh first had a one-on-one meeting with the child, and after observing the child, she began counseling the parents."
The author emphasized Dr. Oh's outstanding counseling skills. They said, "The images of my child that I knew were just pieces of a puzzle," and added, "(Dr. Oh) put them all together and showed me the complete picture."
They further stated, "Considering the treatment and examination fees paid at other centers, the opportunity cost of almost having to give up my livelihood due to no improvement, and above all, the cost that allowed my child to live a healthy and happy daily life, the 810,000 won spent that day remains the most valuable money I have ever spent."
Previously, some netizens and YouTubers criticized Dr. Oh for charging excessive consultation fees.
According to these netizens' claims, Dr. Oh charges over 10,000 won per minute for child consultations. There were also criticisms that she indulges in luxury by purchasing various designer goods with the income generated from her consultation activities. A member of a mom caf? even claimed, "Dr. Oh is an Hermes VVIP, and all the clothes she wears on broadcasts are luxury brands."
However, some pushed back, saying, "Can an expert not receive that level of compensation?" It was pointed out that paying high consultation fees to a top expert in the industry is perfectly reasonable, and that indulging in luxury with one's own earnings is a matter of personal freedom.
One netizen remarked, "I heard Dr. Oh Eun-young's consultation waiting time is as long as a year, so it's natural for such a popular counselor to charge tens of thousands of won for five minutes," and added, "Also, buying luxury goods with her own money?how can that be a target of criticism?"
Meanwhile, Dr. Oh is a domestic child counseling expert, a full member and academic director of the Korean Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and an academic director of the Developmental Disability Treatment and Education Society.
She has gained attention for authoring various books related to child counseling solutions such as 'Oh Eun-young's Reconciliation,' 'How Should I Talk to You,' and 'Anxious Mom, Indifferent Dad.' She has also appeared on psychological and counseling-related TV programs like SBS's 'Our Child Has Changed' and JTBC's 'The Most Ordinary Family,' making her name known to the public.
