[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] LS Cable announced on the 11th that it has secured the largest domestic submarine cable laying vessel and will expand its eco-friendly business.
LS Cable is strengthening its submarine construction capabilities through its first submarine laying vessel, the 8,000-ton 'GL2030', and is proactively preparing for domestic and international offshore wind power projects. With the investment in GL2030, LS Cable becomes the only company in Korea to own both a specialized submarine cable factory and a laying vessel.
An LS Cable official stated, "Until now, there was no dedicated submarine power cable laying vessel in Korea, causing difficulties in coordinating construction schedules and ensuring quality," adding, "By operating the laying vessel directly, we will accumulate know-how and enhance construction expertise."
GL2030 will be primarily deployed in domestic submarine cable projects starting from the first half of next year. LS Cable explained that this submarine laying vessel is equipped with a precise ship positioning control system, which will upgrade Korea's competitiveness in submarine cable laying to the next level.
Myung Nohyun, CEO of LS Cable, said, "Owning and operating the vessel directly allows for flexible schedule adjustments, and we expect to expand participation in submarine cable projects in Southeast Asia and East Asian countries in the future," adding, "We are increasing eco-friendly businesses in line with the global spread of carbon neutrality policies and continue to invest in securing global competitiveness."
Meanwhile, LS Cable recently announced its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management vision and plans for an additional investment of 190 billion KRW in its submarine factory in Donghae City.
