[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Juhyung] "My father, whom I recommended to get vaccinated, has become unable to move a single finger."

A current nurse expressed her frustration after sharing the story of her father, who experienced paralysis in all limbs after receiving the AstraZeneca (AZ) vaccine. The nurse trusted the government and encouraged her father to get vaccinated, but when side effects appeared, the causality was denied.

Nurse A wrote on the Blue House public petition board on the 9th about her father's health condition: "After receiving the first vaccine dose on June 7, he complained of decreased sensation in the soles of his feet starting from the evening 10 days later," adding, "Due to unexplained symptoms, he visited the vaccination medical institution, a nearby internal medicine clinic, and the university hospital emergency room more than five times over 2-3 days, undergoing various tests including CT scans, but no diagnosis was made."

She continued, "It seemed like a vaccine side effect, but since there was nothing they could do, they advised us to monitor the symptoms at home and sent him home," adding, "While my father received no treatment and spent time at home, his symptoms worsened to the point where he had difficulty moving."

A said, "We kept inquiring with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), but the only response was to follow the hospital's instructions," and "On June 20, his oxygen levels dropped significantly, so we took an ambulance to the emergency room, where he was finally diagnosed with Guillain-Barr? Syndrome (GBS), an inflammatory disease mainly affecting peripheral and cranial nerves, after cerebrospinal fluid and electromyography tests."

She added, "Since I am a nurse, I was among the first to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine and fortunately passed without major side effects, so I encouraged my father to get vaccinated with reassurance," expressing, "I truly regret it. Seeing my healthy father suddenly collapse with paralysis in all limbs, unable to move a single finger or toe, broke my heart."

A criticized the KDCA for ruling that her father's severe side effects leading to paralysis were unrelated to the vaccine. She said, "The KDCA's statement that there is no connection to the vaccine has shattered our family once again," pointing out, "Most GBS patients had a severe cold or gastrointestinal infection two weeks before onset, and vaccination is also known as an important cause."

She continued, "(The KDCA) says that causality with side effects cannot be confirmed, so it is difficult to recognize causality, but they offer 10 million won in support for severe patients," adding, "If it cannot be clearly proven that the cause is not the vaccine, shouldn't the side effects be acknowledged? It is disheartening that trusting the government, which claimed vaccines are safe and promised compensation for vaccine-related side effects, has ultimately led to the collapse of a family." This petition had about 3,000 supporters as of the 10th and is under review for publication.
