[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] A woman in her 20s who attempted to kill her elementary school-aged son after suffering from financial difficulties and depression following her divorce from her husband has been brought to trial.
The Jeju District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 5th that they have arrested and indicted a woman in her 20s, identified as A, on charges of attempted murder and violation of the Child Welfare Act.
A is accused of attempting to kill her 7-year-old son B, a first grader in Jeju City, on three occasions from May until last month by strangling him or threatening him with a weapon at their home.
Each time A attempted the crime, B fiercely resisted, resulting in only an attempt. It is also reported that during these incidents, A told B things like "Let's go to heaven together."
During police investigation, A stated, "After divorcing my husband, I suffered from financial difficulties and depression, which led me to commit the crime. I intended to kill B and then myself."
As A's threatening behavior continued, B contacted his maternal grandmother asking, "Please take me to grandmother's house," seeking help. Suspicious of the situation, the grandmother took B home on the 16th of last month and reported suspected abuse to the police.
Meanwhile, B is currently living with his maternal grandmother, and the police plan to provide him with economic support as well as psychological treatment.
