Starting from September 16 with the Fortinet Championship, The CJ Cup to be held in the US for the second consecutive year, WGC series reduced to two events annually
[Asia Economy Kim Hyun-jun, Golf Specialist Reporter] "45 events + 3 Playoffs (PO)."
This is the schedule for the 2021/2022 season of the PGA Tour. On the 4th (Korean time), it was announced that "a total of 48 events will be held from the Fortinet Championship on September 16 to the Tour Championship next August." There are 10 tournaments from September to November, the so-called 'Fall Series,' with the big news being The CJ Cup held in the United States for the second consecutive year. Established in 2017 as the only PGA Tour event in Korea, it was held for three years at Nine Bridges in Jeju Island before moving to the U.S. last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the battleground is The Summit Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 2022 season starts with the Sentry Tournament in January next year. The majors follow with The Players Championship, known as the '5th major,' in March, the Masters in April, the PGA Championship in May, the US Open in June, and The Open in July. The PO maintains its three-event format, but the FedEx St. Jude Championship has replaced the Northern Trust as the first event. The second event is the BMW Championship, followed by the final Tour Championship, where the PO champion receives a $15 million (17.2 billion KRW) bonus.
On the other hand, the status of the prestigious World Golf Championships (WGC) series has significantly declined. The Workday Championship was discontinued in February, and this week's WGC FedEx St. Jude Championship will be incorporated into the PO next year. The annual four events have been halved to two, with the HSBC Champions in October and the Dell Technologies Match Play in March next year. In strategic partnership with the European Tour, the Genesis Scottish Open, Barbasol Championship, and Barracuda Championship will be co-hosted.
