Low Early Retirement Subsidies for Old Diesel Vehicles... Changwon City Proposes Subsidy Revisions

Changwon City Proposes Changes to Early Retirement Subsidies for Old Diesel Vehicles to the Ministry of Environment

Low Early Retirement Subsidies for Old Diesel Vehicles... Changwon City Proposes Subsidy Revisions Changwon City announced on the 2nd that it has requested the Ministry of Environment to change the subsidy payment criteria for early scrapping in order to accelerate the goal of zero old diesel vehicles.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province, announced on the 2nd that it has requested the Ministry of Environment to change the payment criteria for early scrapping subsidies for old diesel vehicles.

Currently, the early scrapping subsidy pays only 70% of the standard vehicle price for vehicles with a total weight under 3.5 tons. When purchasing grade 1 or 2 emission vehicles excluding diesel vehicles, the remaining 30% is paid.

However, it has been found that some livelihood vehicle owners give up early scrapping due to insufficient subsidies.

A sample survey of 500 vehicles receiving subsidies in the first half of the year showed a high repurchase rate of diesel vehicles at 21.2%, while the purchase rate of electric and hydrogen vehicles was relatively low at 2.8%.

Accordingly, the city plans to raise the subsidy for early scrapping from 70% to 100% of the vehicle's standard price.

Additionally, the city requested the Ministry of Environment to differentiate vehicle purchase subsidies by paying 50% of the scrapped vehicle's standard price when purchasing internal combustion engine vehicles such as gasoline or LPG excluding diesel, and 100% when purchasing electric or hydrogen vehicles.

Kim Dongju, Director of Environmental Policy Division, said, "If support for early scrapping of old diesel vehicles and purchasing electric and hydrogen vehicles is expanded, it is expected to reduce fine dust and other air pollutants, improving air quality and greatly contributing to greenhouse gas reduction."
