Paroled Man in His 50s Arrested After Cutting Electronic Ankle Bracelet and Fleeing Just 3 Hours After Release

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man who cut off his electronic monitoring device (electronic anklet) and fled just three hours after being released on parole was caught by the police.

Seoul Guro Police Station announced on the 31st that they arrested a man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, on the spot for attempting to cut off his electronic anklet.

According to the police, Mr. A was serving a prison sentence at Seoul Southern Prison for nighttime residential burglary and was released on parole around 9 a.m. on the 30th.

Three hours after his release, Mr. A attempted to cut the electronic anklet on his ankle using kitchen scissors on a street in Guro-gu, Seoul. As a result, an abnormal signal and location information were transmitted from the electronic anklet.

Police, who were dispatched following a report from the probation office, found Mr. A wandering the street bleeding from his leg within about 10 minutes.

The police arrested Mr. A on the spot and handed him over to the Southern Probation Office, which has jurisdiction.

The Southern Probation Office plans to investigate the circumstances of the crime with Mr. A and then decide whether to apply for an arrest warrant.
