[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Won Hee-ryong, Governor of Jeju Province, resigned from his position on the 1st and announced his candidacy for the presidential election.

On the same day, Governor Won held a press conference at the Jeju Provincial Government auditorium and stated, "I apologize for not being able to complete the term I promised to the residents. I am running for president to achieve a regime change that protects the lives of the people."

Governor Won said, "I hesitated a lot and went through a period of anguish until I decided to resign before completing my term," adding, "I thought about it countless times with a heavy heart. I agonized over whether this was the best course of action."

He continued, "However, South Korea is deteriorating. The lives of the people are collapsing. I can no longer stand by and watch," emphasizing, "To protect the lives of the people, the regime must be changed. Only a regime change can revive South Korea's growth engine and achieve national unity."

Governor Won explained his resignation and candidacy for the primary by saying, "I feel a political responsibility to give everything for regime change. That is why I am stepping forward now," and added, "Although legally possible, it is impossible to simultaneously carry out the duties of governor responsibly and participate in the party primary in accordance with my conscience and public service ethics."

He expressed regret over unfinished matters, including the Jeju Second Airport project, promising, "I will definitely push forward through regime change," and apologized again, saying, "I am truly sorry to step down amid the ongoing crisis caused by COVID-19."

He concluded by asking for the support of the residents, saying, "I ask for the support of the residents for Jeju people's challenge toward South Korea."
