[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] As the fourth wave of COVID-19 continues, the number of new confirmed cases on the 1st was recorded in the mid-1400s.

The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight on that day, 1,442 new confirmed cases were added, bringing the total to 199,787. This is 97 fewer than the previous day (1,539), dropping to the 1400 range for now. It is also 45 fewer than last Saturday (July 25 announcement), which set the weekend's highest record at 1,487.

However, the decrease in new confirmed cases on this day partly reflects the weekend effect of a significant drop in the number of tests, so it is difficult to say that the spread has slowed down.

In particular, the India-origin Delta variant virus, which has higher transmissibility, has already become the dominant strain domestically, and with the peak summer vacation season coinciding, the scale of confirmed cases could increase at any time.

The government plans to monitor the trend of patient occurrences this week and, if the situation worsens, consider additional quarantine strengthening measures in addition to the current 'social distancing' (Level 4 in the metropolitan area and Level 3 in non-metropolitan areas).

◆ Local cases: Metropolitan area 949 cases 68.5%, Non-metropolitan area 437 cases 31.5%... Cumulative confirmed cases to reach 200,000s tomorrow

The fourth wave, which began mainly in the metropolitan area in early last month, is showing nationwide spread as it recently exhibits strong expansion in non-metropolitan areas as well.

The daily confirmed cases have remained in the four digits for 26 consecutive days. Looking at the new confirmed cases over the past week from the 26th of last month to this day, the daily numbers were 1,318 → 1,363 → 1,895 → 1,674 → 1,710 → 1,539 → 1,442, fluctuating between 1,300 and 1,800. The daily average over the week was about 1,563, with the daily average of local cases reaching 1,501.

On this day, the infection routes of new confirmed cases were 1,386 local transmissions and 56 imported cases. Local cases decreased by 153 from the previous day (1,539).

By region, the metropolitan area accounted for 949 cases (68.5%) with Seoul 469, Gyeonggi 393, and Incheon 87.

The non-metropolitan area accounted for 437 cases (31.5%) with Gyeongnam 81, Daejeon 67, Busan 57, Gangwon 44, Chungnam 42, Gyeongbuk 26, Daegu 23, Jeju 20, Ulsan 19, Chungbuk 15, Jeonbuk 13, Gwangju 12, Sejong and Jeonnam 9 each.

The non-metropolitan cases, which had been exceeding 500 daily, fell below 500 for the first time in 12 days since the 20th (409 cases).

However, the proportion of non-metropolitan cases among total local cases has remained above 30% for 16 consecutive days since the 18th of last month (31.6%).

While the non-metropolitan proportion, which once reached around 40%, recently dropped to the low 30% range, the metropolitan proportion has increased again, approaching the 70% range.

The metropolitan proportion over the past week (July 26 to August 1) recorded daily rates of 59.3% → 60.4% → 66.5% → 65.1% → 67.0% → 64.0% → 68.5%.
