[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] The YouTube channel 'MBC News,' which reconstructs and uploads MBC's news reports, has once again sparked controversy by making a subtitle mistake in an interview video with female volleyball player Kim Yeon-koung.
Today (the 1st), MBC News uploaded a video titled '[Full Interview with Kim Yeon-koung] We can do it! Let's try! Don't give up!' on their YouTube channel. The video features an interview with Kim Yeon-koung conducted after the victory of the South Korea-Japan women's volleyball match at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
At 1 minute and 29 seconds into the video, the reporter asked Kim Yeon-koung, "You gave hope to the people; how do you feel about that?" to which Kim Yeon-koung replied, "I feel even prouder." However, the subtitle displayed the reporter's question as "We lost in soccer and baseball, but only won in volleyball?" This was completely different from the reporter's actual question.
Judging only by the incorrectly written subtitle question and answer, it could have been misunderstood that Kim Yeon-koung was belittling the results of other sports. As a result, viewers commented, "The question and subtitle content are different," and "That’s not the question asked to Kim Yeon-koung." Subsequently, MBC News pixelated the problematic subtitle, but as criticism continued, they set the video to private.
Previously, MBC has faced criticism for repeated mistakes during the broadcast of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. On the 23rd, during the opening ceremony broadcast, MBC caused controversy by using inappropriate photos or phrases while introducing some countries. Additionally, on the 25th, during the broadcast of the soccer match between South Korea and Romania, MBC drew criticism again by displaying the subtitle "Thank you, Marin" at the top of the screen, targeting the Romanian player who scored an own goal.
