[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] As the spread of the 4th wave of COVID-19 continues, the number of new confirmed cases on the 1st was recorded in the mid-1400s.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight on that day, 1,442 new confirmed cases were added, bringing the total to 199,787. This is 97 fewer than the previous day (1,539), dropping to the 1400 range for now. It is also 45 fewer than last Saturday (July 25 announcement), which set the weekend's highest record at 1,487 cases.
However, the decrease in new confirmed cases on this day partly reflects the weekend effect of a significant reduction in the number of tests, so it is difficult to say that the spread has slowed down.
With daily confirmed cases exceeding 1,000 continuously, the total number of confirmed cases in the country is approaching 200,000. It is expected to surpass 200,000 on the 2nd, one day later. The number of confirmed cases in the 200,000 range will be reached about 1 year and 6 and a half months, exactly 560 days, after the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Korea on January 20 last year. It will be 130 days since March 25 of this year, when the total exceeded 100,000.
Among the new confirmed cases on this day, 1,386 were locally transmitted and 56 were imported from overseas.
The 4th wave, which began in early last month centered on the Seoul metropolitan area, has recently spread rapidly to non-metropolitan areas, becoming nationwide.
The daily confirmed cases have remained in the four digits for 26 consecutive days since the 7th of last month (1,212 cases).
Looking at the new confirmed cases that occurred in the recent week from the 26th of last month to this day, the daily numbers were 1,318 → 1,363 → 1,895 → 1,674 → 1,710 → 1,539 → 1,442, fluctuating between 1,300 and 1,800 cases.
