[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Dong-guk] Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 1st that four institutions and organizations in the province were finally selected as lead organizations in the '2021 Makerspace Establishment and Operation Project' implemented by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

The 'Makerspace Establishment and Operation Project' is a project that supports the realization of innovative ideas through promoting manufacturing startups by supporting prototype production and mass production, as well as supporting creative maker activities. Since 2018, operating institutions have been selected annually through public contests.

This year, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups selected 7 specialized labs for local governments and 2 for the private sector, and 15 general labs nationwide. Gyeongbuk was selected for 1 specialized lab and 3 general labs. With this achievement, Gyeongbuk now has a total of 1 specialized lab and 11 general labs.

The Gumi Electronics and Information Technology Institute, which has been preparing together with Gyeongbuk Province since last year, plans to establish a one-stop support system through closer cooperation with the province to support idea concretization, technical guidance, startup education, prototype production support, initial quantity production support, and investment linkage.

The East Sea Industrial Research Institute (Uljin), selected as a general lab, will support maker activities in the marine bio field. The Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Kumoh National Institute of Technology (Gumi) will support technology development and prototype production for manufacturing companies, and Catholic Sangji University (Andong) plans to actively nurture makers in the drone and 3D printing fields.

The Gumi Electronics and Information Technology Institute, selected as a specialized lab, will receive up to 2.7 billion KRW in national funding over three years, and the three organizations selected as general labs will receive up to 330 million KRW in national funding over three years. Additional support for up to two years can be received through evaluation.

Governor Lee Cheol-woo said, "I am very pleased that four organizations were selected for the Makerspace project, which will breathe new life into the regional manufacturing startup sector," and added, "We will actively support the establishment of an ecosystem where residents' creative ideas lead to successful startups."
