[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The '2021 9th Gwangju Design Biennale,' hosted by Gwangju Metropolitan City and organized by the Gwangju Design Promotion Agency, is just 30 days away.
The event will be held for 61 days from its opening on September 1st until October 31st at various locations throughout Gwangju, including the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall.
It will be richly composed of five main exhibitions (Theme Hall, International Hall, AI Hall, Experience Hall, Regional Industry Hall), one special exhibition, two commemorative exhibitions, international academic events, an online market, experience programs, and events.
This year’s theme for the Gwangju Design Biennale is 'd-Revolution,' fitting for Gwangju as an AI-centered city leading the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
This signifies a revolution in Gwangju through design, not by past industrial inventions.
Through this event, the city plans to create experiences and share design that leads international status as well as innovative value creation for life and the future, and to produce business creation and tangible industrialization project results where future new industries and regional innovation converge.
Chief Director Kim Hyun-sun said, “Through design, we aim to engage in a dialogue between the past and present, broaden the horizon of the future, and embody the spirit of the times that embraces change and difference,” adding, “We will express healing moments responding to the numerous revolutions and everyday changes already occurring in the design field through new communication methods such as non-face-to-face and contactless.”
The Gwangju Design Biennale is planned by 35 curators, including Chief Director Kim Hyun-sun, who organize exhibitions by field, special exhibitions, academic events, and promotions.
Notably, soprano Jo Sumi, known as the voice from heaven, is serving as the Design Biennale’s ambassador, and on the 10th of next month, K-POP singer Alexa, with an artificial intelligence concept, will be additionally appointed to promote the event domestically and internationally.
Son Kyung-jong, Director of the AI Industry Bureau of the city, stated, “The AI Hall and Regional Industry Hall aim to represent the spirit of Gwangju by presenting the characteristics of the region and its accumulated historical background through the vision of artificial intelligence,” and added, “We ask for the interest of many citizens.”
